N-plant neighbors may get iodine pills
News On Japan via Yomiuri -- Jan 25
The Nuclear Regulation Authority has released a draft revision of guidelines designed to ensure the safety of residents near nuclear power plants in the event of an accident, including a measure to provide iodine pills in advance to those within a five-kilometer radius.
If it wins a consensus, the revised guidelines could go into effect as early as next month, an NRA official said.
The advance distribution of iodine pills would be made to those living within a five-kilometer radius of a nuclear power plant, as such residents would be required to evacuate in the event of a major accident.
