East Japan Railway Co. is planning to construct a new line connecting central Tokyo and Haneda Airport ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, it has been learned.
According to sources, JR East is likely to utilize the Tokaido freight line, which connects a site near JR Yamanote Line's Tamachi Station and the Tokyo Bay area where the airport is located. The line's operations are currently suspended. A new station will be built in the basement of the airport terminal, and connected with the new line via a tunnel.
The last section of the Joban Expressway, designed to connect the Tokyo metropolitan area with the Tohoku northeastern region, opened to traffic on Sunday after delays caused by the nuclear crisis that began almost four years ago. (The Japan News)
