Aug 02 (NHK) - A magnitude 5.5 earthquake has struck north of Tokyo. The tremor occurred at 2:02 AM on Wednesday. The epicenter was in northern Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The quake registered an intensity of 4 on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to 7 in parts of Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, and Chiba prefectures. An intensity of 3 was registered in some areas of Tokyo.
The Japan Meteorological Agency says there is no tsunami threat.
Local authorities are checking for possible damage. There are no reports of any serious injuries so far. Tokyo Electric Power Company says there are no irregularities at the crippled nuclear facility in Fukushima.
