Monument unveiled for 2015 river disaster

Sep 11 (NHK) - A stone monument has been unveiled near a levee that collapsed 2 years ago on the Kinugawa River, north of Tokyo.

The rain-swollen river burst its banks, killing 3 people and flooding nearly 10,000 homes in Joso City.

6 others later died because of the disaster.

The one-meter monument has been put up in the Kami-Misaka district, where 8 homes were washed away.

About 150 people attended the unveiling ceremony on Sunday.

Mayor Takeshi Kandatsu said he would like to keep in mind the lessons learned, and work to build a safe and secure community.
