Emperor harvests rice in Imperial Palace

Emperor Akihito has harvested rice at a paddy field in the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, as part of an annual event.

He planted rice in the paddy, which is about 240 square meters in size, in May. On Wednesday, he used a sickle to reap 2 varieties of rice, wearing a long-sleeved shirt and a pair of trousers.

Officials at the Imperial Household Agency said the rice had generally grown without any problems, although daylight hours last month were shorter than usual. They added this year's harvest is about average.

天皇陛下が皇居で恒例の稲刈りをされました。今年は夏の日照時間が少なかったものの、作柄は平年並みだということです。 13日夕方、陛下は皇居にある水田で100株の稲を丁寧に収穫されました。皇居での稲作は、農家の苦労を分かち合うために昭和天皇が始め、その後、陛下が引き継がれました。
