NHK -- Sep 18

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is on his way to New York to attend the UN General Assembly.

Abe left Tokyo's Haneda Airport on Monday afternoon.

He will stay in New York until Friday and speak before the UN General Assembly.

Speaking to reporters before his departure, Abe said he will emphasize the need for the international community to unite in the face of repeated dangerous provocations by North Korea.

Abe said he will strongly urge the international community to fully implement the recent UN sanctions resolution against North Korea.

He said he will discuss North Korea with US President Donald Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in at their bilateral and trilateral summits and reaffirm their close cooperation.

He also said he hopes to hold talks with as many leaders as possible to strengthen cooperation among the international community.

While in New York, Abe is also scheduled to meet leaders of African nations that serve as UN Security Council members and attend a meeting of leaders of the Pacific island nations. He will use the meetings to ask for their cooperation in applying more pressure on North Korea.
