Japan logs trade surplus of 113.6 b. yen in Aug.

Japan logged a customs-cleared trade surplus of 113.6 billion yen in August, compared with 34.6 billion yen in deficit a year before, the Finance Ministry said in a preliminary report Wednesday.

The result came against the median forecast of 108.7 billion yen in surplus among 21 research institutes surveyed by Jiji Press.

Exports rose 18.1 pct to 6,278 billion yen, and imports grew 15.2 pct to 6,164.4 billion yen, the ministry said.

In trade with the United States, Japan's surplus expanded 49.6 pct to 534.7 billion yen. Exports were up 21.8 pct, and imports were up 5.7 pct.

In trade with mainland China, Japan's deficit narrowed to 239.8 billion yen from 344.8 billion yen. Exports rose 25.8 pct, and imports were up 11.0 pct.
