Jan 24 (NHK) - A US military helicopter made an emergency landing on Tuesday on a small island in the southern Japanese prefecture of Okinawa.
Police and local officials say the AH-1 attack helicopter carrying 2 crewmembers landed on a helipad in Tonaki Village.
The aircraft is based at the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in the prefecture.
Mayor Suguru Tobaru told NHK he has been informed that a signal came on indicating a problem with the hydraulic system. He also said the aircraft is one of 2 helicopters taking part in a drill near Irisuna Island to the west of Tonaki Island.
Village officials say the helipad is used to transport people who need emergency medical treatment.
Earlier this month, another AH-1 helicopter landed near a hotel in Yomitan Village in Okinawa.
In January last year, the same type of aircraft made an emergency landing on Ikeijima Island because of technical trouble.
