Expressway operators say some Tokyo-bound sections were backed up for about 30 kilometers as of 6:30 PM on Saturday.
Shinkansen bullet train operators say trains bound for Tokyo are filled with returning travelers.
And airline companies say almost all their domestic flights bound for Tokyo or Osaka are full.
Planes and trains are expected to continue to be packed on Sunday, the last day of the holiday period.
Traffic on the expressways is expected to ease, although some Tokyo-bound sections are expected to be backed up for more than 20 kilometers.
