Jiji -- Jul 20
Temperatures in Kyoto rose as high as 39.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday, tying the city's record high logged on Aug. 8, 1994, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Temperatures reached 38.0 degrees or higher in the western Japan city for six straight days, for the first time on record since 1880.

According to the Kyoto Local Meteorological Office, heat accumulated in the city, a basin region, after a sunny spell.

In Kyoto, many people were seen waving fans and holding cold drinks while walking.

"It's very humid and smotheringly hot," said Wakako Hayakawa, 43, a corporate employee visiting Kyoto for pleasure from the western city of Okayama. "The sunlight is hurting my skin."
