Sep 04 (NHK) - Flooding caused by Typhoon Jebi has forced the closure of Kansai International Airport in western Japan. Heavy rain on Tuesday afternoon left a runway under water.
Strong winds blew a 89-meter long tanker into a bridge connecting the airport and Izumi-sano city shortly after 1:30 PM. None of its 11 crew was injured.
The accident damaged the bridge road. It has been closed to traffic, leaving many people stranded at the airport.
Transport ministry officials say one of two airport runways is submerged, and some buildings are also flooded. The 3,500-meter long runway is 5 meters above sea level.
One person was injured by broken glass in a shopping facility in one of the terminal buildings.
