Nov 26 (Japan Today) - A snow crab caught in the western Japan prefecture of Tottori earlier this month has been recognized by Guinness World Records as receiving the most expensive-ever bid for a crab at auction, the prefectural government said.
The crab, which sold for 2 million yen ($17,700), was caught in the port of Tottori city on Nov 7, and had already been determined to be an "Itsukiboshi" high-end crab with its 14.6-centimeter shell and weight of 1.28 kilograms.
A crab is determined to be worthy of the top label based on its size, weight, shape, color and amount of meat.
The bidder was Tetsuji Hamashita, a fishmonger. The crab has been gifted alive to a crab exhibition in the city.
