Toyota is building a $10 billion smart city at the base of Mount Fuji. Woven City will be a living laboratory where Toyota employees, engineers, scientists, and researchers can live and work.

The state-of-the-art smart city will feature eco-friendly smart houses, numerous types of robots, and autonomous vehicles. The city will be built on a unique grid system with three different types of roads seamlessly weaved together to create an interconnected community. Some roads will be used exclusively by autonomous vehicles like the Toyota e-Palette. Other roads will be for pedestrians and people on bicycles and mobility scooters like the Toyota i Walk. The final type of road will be a linear park that can only be used by pedestrians. The smart homes in Woven City will be built by robots and put together using traditional Japanese construction methods. Combining technology with nature will be a major theme in Woven City. The Central Plaza will be a place where residents can socialize and shop. Technology has resulted in humans spending less time outside and more time online, but designers want to make Woven City’s Central Plaza a new type of town square where residents can bring human connectivity to the forefront. Woven City's underground transport system called matternet can be used to deliver food and other goods directly to people's homes using Toyota Micro-Palette robots.
