62-year-old man arrested after setting wife on fire

Police in Ryugasaki, Ibaraki Prefecture, have arrested a 62-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder after he doused his 53-year-old wife with alcohol disinfectant and set fire to her.

According to police, Fumiyoshi Iwamoto, a construction worker, threw the liquid on his wife at around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at their home, Fuji TV reported. He then used a lighter to set fire to her. The woman suffered burns to her face but was able to call 119.

Firefighters said about half of the house was destroyed by the fire which spread after the woman fell to the floor.

Police said Iwamoto has denied intent to kill. He said he and his wife were drunk at the time and that he can’t remember how the fire started.
