Immune-deficient pigs created for organ transplant research

A team of Japanese scientists has succeeded in creating an unprecedented type of immune-deficient pig that can be used for regenerative medicine research and the development of new drugs.
The male pigs, created by combining genetic engineering and cloning techniques, lack a thymus (an immune organ) and have no T cells or natural killer (NK) cells, both lymphocytes, according to the team that includes researchers from the National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences and Riken.
