The Financial Services Agency issued a business improvement order to KPMG Azsa LLC and Ernst & Young ShinNihon LLC on Friday for their inadequate auditing of Olympus Corp.
The agency concluded the auditors failed to recognize the risks attached to the precision-equipment maker, whose years of loss cover-ups came to light last November, due to poor internal communications.
It also pointed out there was a lack of communication between Azsa and ShinNihon, which was asked to take over the auditing job from Azsa in May 2009, despite the fact that Olympus posted more than 100 billion yen in extraordinary losses in the preceding fiscal year.
