Fundraising starts for 'miracle' pine

The city of Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, said it has set up a fund to seek donations to preserve the "miracle" pine tree that withstood the March 11, 2011, tsunami, hoping it can serve as a symbol of reconstruction.
Although the tree is no longer living, it remained standing when the massive tsunami wiped out the pine forest it was part of.
A strong wind or heavy rainstorm could bring it down, according to the city.
