The attack on an official car carrying the Japanese ambassador to China in Beijing on Aug. 27 was likely carried out impulsively at the sight of a Japanese flag, according to a Chinese public security source.
In the incident, one of four suspects snatched the flag from the car of Ambassador Uichiro Niwa, apparently out of frustration over the Japanese government's handling of a territorial dispute over the Senkaku Islands, which are called Diaoyu in China.
A white BMW and a silver Audi cut ahead of Niwa's car on a Beijing street and forced it to stop. A Chinese man got out of the BMW and ripped the flag off the ambassador's car. The BMW and the Audi then sped away from the scene.
