A 20-year-old university student has confessed to waiting for a 12-year-old girl to be alone before threatening her at knifepoint and kidnapping her at JR Nishi-Hiroshima Station here on Sept. 4, investigative sources say.
The suspect, identified as Tomohiro Kodama, was arrested Sept. 4 and referred to prosecutors on Sept. 6 on suspicion of confinement and kidnapping of a minor.
He told investigators he bought a travel bag and duct tape in Hiroshima in late August before using them to put the girl into the trunk of a taxi, the sources say, adding he had brought a fruit knife from Tokyo. Hiroshima Prefectural Police are checking if the kidnapping was premeditated.
