Colowide Co., a major restaurant chain operator that owns izakaya pub chains Amataro and Hokkaido, plans to purchase Rex Holdings Co., operator of the Gyukaku barbeque chain, sources said Friday.
Colowide is expected to make Rex its subsidiary by acquiring two-thirds of its stock from an investment firm as early as October.
By acquiring a barbeque chain, Colowide expects to strengthen its abilities to procure foodstuffs and to cope with fierce competition from rival chains who are cutting prices and opening new locations.
Rex owns about 1,200 restaurants including the Gyukaku brand and the Doma-Doma izakaya pub chain.
