Seven & i Holdings Co. plans to halve the number of full-time employees at its Ito-Yokado Co. supermarket chain, while sharply increasing the number of part-time workers by around fiscal 2015, with the aim of cutting personnel costs, it was learned Saturday.
Seven & i, a leading distribution holding company, says it seeks to boost the performance of its supermarket-related units, which have been waning in recent years, by strengthening their earnings structure.
Given the ongoing trend of budget-minded consumers due to a prolonged economic slump, competition among supermarket chains has been intensifying.
It is expected that moves will continue to spread in the supermarket sector to trim personnel expenditures by replacing full-time workers with part-timers.
