30.7 million people aged 65 or older

The number of people in Japan aged 65 and over hit an all-time high of 30.74 million as of Saturday, according to Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry estimates released the day before Respect for the Aged Day on Monday.
The figure rose 1.02 million, or 3.4 percent, from a year before, according to the report. The elderly now account for a record 24.1 percent of the population, up 0.8 percentage point.
The number of elderly men was 13.15 million, 21.2 percent of the total male population. The number of elderly women was 17.59 million, 26.9 percent of the total female population.
