Sales at Japanese supermarkets in August fell 1.3 percent from a year before on a same-store basis, down for the sixth consecutive month, due in part to a plunge in vegetable prices, the Japan Chain Stores Association said Monday.
Total sales at 7,842 stores run by 57 companies came to 1,041.7 billion yen, the association said.
Prices of vegetables, such as lettuce, cabbage and cucumber, dropped 30 percent to 40 percent from an average year because of a surge in supplies, causing food sales, which account for about 60 percent of the overall supermarket sales, to decrease 1.5 percent on a same-store basis.
