Nippon Ishin no Kai (Japan Restoration Party), the national political party launched by Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto last month, has held its first general meeting in Osaka.
"Ishin no Kai's style is the key to Japan's revival," Hashimoto said at the start of the meeting Saturday, referring to the party's flat organizational structure in which Diet lawmakers are on equal footing with local assembly members.
"You can't break the current stalemate in Japan if you continue to do the same old thing," Hashimoto said.
Hashimoto, the party's leader, said he would make a decision in cases where the party's lawmakers and local assembly members are looking in different directions.
The Japanese word "choju," meaning longevity, implies, with its kanji, joyous celebration of long life. Intrinsically, it is a joyful thing for people to live long. But if a society has many people who age in solitude, isolated from their families and local communities, it cannot be called choju. It should rather be called "roka shakai," or a society that weakens as it ages. (Yomiuri )
