East Atlantic bluefin tuna population recovers

Conservations experts say the population of bluefin tuna in the East Atlantic has increased. It marks a reversal of decades of declining numbers.
A report by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna says observers have spotted a clear-cut increase in recent years.
The bluefin population in the Mediterranean Sea and other waters in the East Atlantic declined from the 1970s to the mid-2000s.
The report says the population recovered as Japan and other countries reduced their catch in line with guidelines set by the commission.
The surprise result could lead to expanded fishing quotas in a meeting next month in Morocco to discuss management of Atlantic bluefin tuna stocks.
But a Japanese fisheries ministry official cautions against a sudden increase in quotas, saying the report does not mention the scale of the increase.
