Powerful typhoon causes blackouts in southern Japan
News On Japan via Bernama -- Oct 18
Islands of southern Japan suffered strong winds which caused blackouts after Typhoon Prapiroon, the 21st of the season, passed near the area early Thursday, China's Xinhua news agency said quoting local news agency's reports.
The powerful storm passed near the Amami Oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture early Thursday morning and further caused landslide damages on the islands of Amami in the prefecture, cutting off power to more than 1,200 households in several towns on the islands in the morning according to the local broadcaster MBC.
The local power utility, Kyushu Electric Power Co. is now investigating details of the damages to restore power as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, the storm caused disruption to air and sea travel operations. All flights at local airports on the islands and ferry services in and out of the islands have been cancelled since the morning hours.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the typhoon was expected to move northeast into the Pacific Ocean from Thursday through Friday. The agency also warned of heavy rainfall and strong winds across a wide area of Japan's Honshu Island along the sea.
