Yamanaka team creates iPS prototype in 3 months

A team led by Japanese Nobel laureate Shinya Yamanaka created the world's first prototype of an induced pluripotent stem cell, or iPS cell, only 3 months after the project began.
The details of Yamanaka's research were revealed in documents obtained by NHK. They have not been previously disclosed due to concerns over intellectual property rights.
Kazutoshi Takahashi, the principal researcher at the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application, compiled the results of the tests.
The documents say the team made a plan to reprogram cells in June 2005. They chose a set of 24 genes from more than 20,000 found in mice.
The team observed no developments when only one gene was inserted into skin cells. But it created the world's first iPS prototype cell by using all 24 genes in August 2005.
