Fewer firms want to keep staff till 65

Japan's health and labor ministry says fewer than 50 percent of firms plan to continue employing workers until the age of 65.
The ministry conducted a nationwide survey in June of about 140,000 firms with more than 30 employees.
The survey says 48.8 percent of these companies allow their staff to keep working until 65 and after that age if they wish. The figure is up 0.9 percentage points from the previous survey.
Among the firms with 300 or fewer workers, 51.7 percent want their staff to continue working until they turn 65. But only 24.3 percent of companies with more than 300 employees share the same view.
From April next year, employees will be legally entitled to work until 65 to offset the gradual postponement of the age for claiming pensions.
