Sono's drama latest in long history of Japanese nuclear-themed films

Prolific film director Shion Sono's dramatization of events after last year's Great East Japan Earthquake resulted in "Himizu," which focuses on a murderous spree by two teenagers in the devastated Tohoku region.
Sono, also held in high regard for his avant-garde poetry performances, had already written the script when disaster struck, forcing him into a rewrite to adapt to local circumstances.
"Himizu" was shot in an area devastated by the tsunami and set in May, two months after the disaster that claimed an estimated 20,000 lives.
