Japan pair wins gold in mixed doubles table tennis

The Japanese pair won the table tennis mixed doubles on Monday, earning Japan's first Olympic gold medal in that sport.

Mizutani Jun and Ito Mima beat the Chinese pair of Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen in the finals, four games to three.

The Chinese pair won the title in the 2019 Championships and was considered Japan's biggest rival.

The bronze medal went to the Taiwanese pair.

The mixed doubles event for table tennis debuted in the Tokyo Games.
