Tokyo to host 2025 World Athletics Championships

Tokyo has been selected by the World Athletics Council to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships. It will be Japan's third time hosting the event.

The decision was made at the council's meeting in the US state of Oregon on Thursday.

The Japanese Association of Athletics Federations submitted a bid last year. The National Stadium in Tokyo will be used for the event. It was used as the main stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

Inspectors from the international athletics body visited the stadium in May of this year.

Japan Sports Agency Commissioner Murofushi Koji and Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko encouraged them to use the facility. The two officials indicated that the stadium is a part of Japan's Olympic legacy.
