Japanese economy marks third consecutive quarter of growth

Japan's latest GDP figures show its economy grew in the April-to-June period for the third consecutive quarter.

The Cabinet Office on Monday said the economy expanded in the April-June period at an annualized rate of real 2.2 percent from the previous quarter.

The growth is mainly due to a recovery of consumer spending, which accounts for more than half of Japan's gross domestic product.

Consumption in service industries, such as restaurants and travel, increased after COVID-19 quasi-emergency measures were lifted nationwide in March.
