Visitors to Ueno Zoo farewell giant panda Xiang Xiang before departure for China

TOKYO, Feb 14 (NHK) - Visitors to Tokyo's Ueno Zoo are bidding farewell to Xiang Xiang the giant panda before she leaves for China in a week's time.

About 2,600 people who were chosen by lottery were each given roughly two minutes to view Xiang Xiang in her enclosure on Tuesday.

People took photos and videos of the zoo's beloved icon as she munched on bamboo and climbed a wooden frame.

Born six years ago, Xiang Xiang is the first giant panda to be born and raised naturally at the zoo. Based on a pact with Beijing, she will be sent to China for good on February 21 for breeding purposes. ...continue reading
