AI Virtual Assistants Take on Teaching Assistant Roles

TOKYO, Apr 26 (News On Japan) - In a pioneering move, a Japanese university has unveiled a demonstration class where Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered virtual assistants collaborated with professors to enhance educational quality. This initiative, part of a partnership with a company specializing in digital talent development, was showcased on April 25th at Japan Economic University.

The virtual assistants employed in the class took on several supportive tasks traditionally handled by human assistants. They summarized student questions for professors, created review questions based on the lecture content, and interacted with students to tailor discussions to individual interests, aiming to provide personalized instruction even in large classes.

One student appreciated the new system's benefits, noting that the AI allows for one-on-one queries via chat without the usual nervousness of asking 'silly questions' and without interrupting the professor's flow, as responses are prompt and private.

The university plans to further integrate AI into its operations, not only to enhance educational outcomes but also to reduce the workload on its teaching staff, paving the way for more efficient academic environments.
