Feb 07 (NHK) - Japan's Imperial Household Agency has announced the postponement of the wedding of Princess Mako, daughter of Prince Akishino, and Kei Komuro. The event was scheduled for November.
At a news conference on Tuesday, agency official Takaharu Kachi said a string of events leading up to the wedding will be rescheduled.
The official said a series of important functions will be held next year related to the abdication of the Emperor and the accession of the Crown Prince.
He said the young couple's wedding is expected to be held in 2020 after all such Imperial functions have duly ended.
The agency says the couple realized that they did not have sufficient time to fully prepare for the wedding and their life together.
The agency had announced the Princess's engagement to a university friend in September of last year.
The wedding was initially scheduled for November 4th at a Tokyo hotel.
The couple planned to hold a ceremony to exchange betrothal gifts on March 4th.
The agency says the couple fully intends to marry, and that the agency is committed to making all necessary preparations for their wedding based on their wishes.
