TOKYO, Sep 29 (News On Japan) - Ohnosato claimed his fifth career championship at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament on September 28th at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan, prevailing in a playoff against fellow yokozuna Hoshoryu after both finished with 13 wins and 2 losses.
For the 25-year-old, whose real name is Taiki Nakamura and hails from Ishikawa Prefecture, it marked his first title since his promotion to yokozuna two tournaments ago.
Hoshoryu, 26, pushed Ohnosato into the decider with a strong showing but fell short in the playoff. The win underscored Ohnosato’s rapid rise in the sport, securing another major milestone early in his yokozuna career.
