Aug 27 (NHK) - Officials with Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force say one of their helicopters went out of contact during a training mission on Saturday night. They say it may have crashed into the sea.
The SH-60 patrol helicopter was flying over the Sea of Japan about 90 kilometers off Cape Tappi when it went out of contact. The cape faces the Tsugaru Strait, a channel between the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido in northern Japan.
MSDF officials say they received a distress signal from the chopper immediately after that.
Four MSDF members were on board, and one of them was rescued about 40 minutes later. The rescued member reportedly was not seriously injured.
