Oct 29 (Japan Today) - Police in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture, said Saturday they have arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder after he stabbed a 49-year-old woman in the parking lot of a supermarket.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of an Ito-Yokado supermarket in Anesaki, Sankei Shimbun reported.
Police said the suspect, Shota Toda, from Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, approached the woman just as she was about to get into her car and stabbed her in the lower abdomen. The woman's fingers were also cut as she tried to defend herself.
Two men who saw the incident chased Toda and subdued him until police arrived.
The woman was taken to hospital where she was in a stable condition Saturday. She told police she did not know her attacker.
Police said Toda has admitted to the charge but refused to give a motive. He was quoted as saying he doesn't want to say why he did it.
