Oct 29 (NHK) - Japan's Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso has clarified his remark suggesting that his Liberal Democratic Party achieved its recent landslide election victory thanks to North Korea.
Aso made the remark at a meeting of his party's lawmakers on Thursday.
Referring to the victory, he said the Sunday election was the first in which the proportion of seats won by the so-called leftist camp was below 20 percent.
He added that North Korea clearly helped, suggesting that the threat from the country may have influenced voters.
On Friday, Aso told reporters that he meant that Japanese people made a choice based on which combination of parties could best deal with a series of crises related to North Korea.
