Nov 27 (NHK) - Police in northern Japan say a 12-year-old boy has admitted to stabbing a woman. He has been placed under temporary custody by child welfare authorities.
A company employee in her 20s suffered a serious injury when she was stabbed in the back with a kitchen knife on a street in Sapporo City on Saturday evening. She was on her way home on foot at the time.
Police examined security camera footage and questioned a first-year junior high school student living in the city.
Police quote him as saying he stabbed her and that he wanted to hurt someone. They say the boy and the woman had never met each other.
Police say they found at his home a box apparently used for the knife's packaging.
Police say the boy told them that he shoplifted the knife at a large store about a month ago.
Police referred him to child welfare authorities on Sunday night, as Japanese law exempts those aged under 14 from criminal responsibility.
