Jan 23 (NHK) - The biggest snowfall in 4 years has blanketed Tokyo and surrounding areas, halting train service and forcing cancellation of hundreds of flights.
The snowfall began Monday morning and is expected to continue until the early hours of Tuesday.
More than 20 centimeters have already accumulated in central Tokyo. Authorities say slippery road conditions have caused more than 600 traffic accidents. Over 60 people have been injured in falls.
Sections of expressways around the capital have been closed. About 50 vehicles were stranded on Tokyo's iconic Rainbow Bridge as many of them couldn't climb up the slope.
More than 300 flights to and from airports in the region have been canceled. Rail and long-distance bus services have also been affected.
