Apr 12 (Kyodo) - The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Iwami Ginzan silver mine in western Japan was partially damaged by the magnitude-6.1 earthquake that jolted the area early Monday, local government officials said.
The officials said Wednesday they found damage at 12 locations at the site in Oda, Shimane Prefecture. Damaged structures included a stone wall of a former temple and old houses.
The remains of two mineshafts, the main tourist attractions of the site, were undamaged but remain closed for fear of aftershocks.
