May 30 (NHK) - League officials have decided to expel 2 former Nihon University American football coaches over a dangerous foul that has made headlines in Japan.
The incident has become the subject of debate as one of their players confessed that the coaches ordered him to take a cheap shot.
During a game earlier this month, a Nihon University defender tackled the Kwansei Gakuin University quarterback from behind long after he'd thrown a pass. The quarterback suffered injuries that took 3 weeks to heal.
Head coach Masato Uchida and coach Tsutomu Inoue resigned after the incident.
They say they told the defender to "crush" the quarterback, but did not mean to foul or injure him.
League officials decided to expel the coaches, the heaviest penalty possible.
Police are also investigating whether to hold the 2 men criminally liable.
