Jun 01 (NHK) - Organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games have unveiled the course that will be used for both the men's and women's marathons.
The 42.195-kilometer course revealed by the organizing committee on Thursday will take runners on a tour of both modern and historical landmarks in the Japanese capital.
The race will start at the new Olympic stadium in central Tokyo. From there, the runners will head east to the Nihonbashi area.
They will make their first turn in front of Kaminarimon, or the Thunder Gate, in the Asakusa area. They will then head south for the second turn at Tokyo Tower.
Next, the competitors will run along the outer garden of the Imperial Palace before heading back to the finish line at the Olympic stadium.
The International Association of Athletics Federations strongly urged the organizing committee to include the city's iconic landmarks, such as the Imperial Palace and Asakusa, in the course.
