Man on transmission pole stops trains

Jun 04 (NHK) - Railway service has been stopped for almost 3 hours as a man climbed a transmission pole at a station in Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo. Around 30,000 passengers were affected.

East Japan Railway Company officials say that the man scaled the pole on Saturday night at Makuharihongo station on the JR Sobu line which connects Tokyo and Chiba.

Police and emergency officials came to the scene. After about 2 hours, the man came down.

Police arrested 51-year-old Shinya Ieda on suspicion of illegal property entry.

The railway operator says just before the incident a man fled from the station when a passenger claimed she was groped on a train.

Police believe it was Ieda who fled the scene and then climbed up the pole.
