Jun 13 (Japan Today) - The head of an Osaka game arcade operator was found guilty Tuesday of making claw machines unwinnable and defrauding customers of money by encouraging them to play the rigged machines last year.
The Osaka District Court sentenced Amusement Trust President Takeshi Odaira, 33, to three years in prison, suspended for four years, for colluding with employees to defraud eight people of 1.23 million yen at a game arcade in central Osaka between October and December. Prosecutors sought an unsuspended three and a half years in prison.
The victims paid 1,000 to 5,000 yen each time they played the rigged machines, which displayed expensive prizes such as tablet devices and video game machines.
The ruling said Odaira, together with his employees, defrauded the victims by encouraging them to play more by telling them all the money they had spent would be wasted if they did not make further attempts, according to the ruling.
