Mitakeumi wins 1st sumo title

Jul 22 (NHK) - In sumo, Mitakeumi beat Tochiozan on the 14th day of the Nagoya tournament on Saturday to win his first title with 13 wins and one loss, ahead of the final day.

The victory in his 21st tournament is the 3rd fastest since the annual 6-tournament system was established in 1958.

Five out of the 6 wrestlers who have won the title before, including 3 sitting Yokozunas and one Ozeki, withdrew from the tournament.

The third-ranked Sekiwake wrestler used his quickness to notch 11 consecutive wins since the first day of the tournament.

Mitakeumi is the first Sekiwake to win the title since Terunofuji, who won the title in 2015.
