Sep 12 (NHK) - Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics has announced it's going to buy the US company Integrated Device Technology.
Renesas hopes to boost its expertise in data-processing and self-driving car technologies.
Renesas officials say the company has agreed to pay more than 6.5 billion dollars for the purchase, the largest ever for a Japanese semiconductor maker. IDT boasts strength in designing and developing chips for communications.
The acquisition comes at a time when competitors in the global semiconductor industry are realigning themselves across national borders in the face of increased competition.
