Kansai Internationl Airport resumes all services

Sep 21, 2018 (NHK) - Kansai International Airport in Osaka Prefecture fully reopened on Friday. Severe damage caused by a powerful typhoon earlier this month had forced the closure of most of its operations.

All services resumed in the morning at the North Wing of Terminal 1, which is used by many airlines. Part of the terminal and Terminal 2 as well as 2 runways had previously reopened.

The airport operator says it expects 395 flights -- both domestic and international -- to use the terminal on Friday.

This will bring the number of flights at the airport to 471, almost equal to its normal operating capacity.

But part of the road section of the access bridge to the airport is still closed even though the rail portion is running. Powerful winds and waves from the typhoon pushed an oil tanker into the bridge, causing heavy damage.

The Japanese government says it seeks to reopen the road fully by the holiday season in early May.
