Jul 09 (NHK) - A fire in a renowned entertainment district of Japan's ancient capital, Kyoto, has been contained. It burned five buildings in the area, but no one was injured.
On Monday night, firefighters were alerted to the blaze that engulfed a two-story wooden building on the main street of the Gion district.
Over 20 fire engines were deployed to the scene. The blaze burned the wooden building and other 4 structures nearby before it was extinguished about three and a half hours later.
The firefighters are looking into a witness account of a fire spreading to the roof through a kitchen ventilation duct of an eatery in the building.
The district is a popular draw for tourists, thanks to stone-paved streets lined with traditional Japanese restaurants and tea houses.
